Programs & Exhibits Assistant

Job Title:                    Programs and Exhibits Assistant
Location:                    Telluride Historical Museum (THM)
Reports To:               Director of Programs and Exhibits
FLSA Status:              Hourly, part-time
Wage:                         $15/hour (weekly hours will vary, but not exceed 24-32)

General Description
The Telluride Historical Museum seeks a Programs and Exhibits Assistant who will assist in the development and facilitation of the museum’s education programs, events, and activities, as well as initiatives to connect the museum’s exhibitions and collections to wider audiences. The position will be primarily focused on assisting with the museum’s education programming and exhibits with the goal of fostering community engagement, appreciation, and enthusiasm for Telluride’s regional history.

The position will work directly under the Director of Programs and Exhibits in building an intellectually lively and welcoming interpretation of the museum’s artifacts across the museum.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Assists in the implementation and facilitation of the museum’s education and public programs.
  • Assists in the installation of the museum’s temporary, off-site, and permanent exhibitions;
  • Works closely with all levels of museum staff to assist in the development of public and educational programming, exhibit interpretation, and interactive elements that enrich permanent and temporary exhibitions;
  • Assists in the management and recruitment of volunteers;
  • Contributes to newsletter articles, marketing and public relations, catalogue essays, and exhibition text as necessary;
  • Assists in assuring that the museum’s educational programs and activities are relevant to the community and museum visitors, and are of the highest professional caliber.

 

Desired Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Experience

  • Some knowledge of Telluride’s regional history
  • Some knowledge of museum education practice and theory is preferred
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team for the purposes of enhancing museum exhibitions and programs.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
  • Familiarity with Adobe creative suite and general graphic design principles
  • Experience working with volunteers.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
  • Experience working with/speaking to/presenting to a variety of different audiences from children to adults
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with fellow employees, board members, donors, and the general public
  • Excels in the use of Windows operating programs, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited four year college with a degree in a humanities discipline or other disciplines related to the goals and objectives of the museum.
  • At least two years’ experience working/volunteering in a non-profit environment, preferably in programming and/or education.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs or more, including up stairs and ladders
  • Passion for communicating the value of museums and museum education, and an unfaltering enthusiasm for the power of artifacts and the museum setting to change lives.
