Executive Director

The Telluride Historical Museum seeks an energetic, community-focused and creative individual to become its next Executive Director.

The mission of the Museum is to preserve the rich, colorful, and diverse history of the region and to bring history to life through exhibits, programs and education. 

The Museum is located in Telluride, Colorado, a historic mining town and world-class ski resort, in the San Juan Mountains.

Responsibilities include administration and financial management of the Museum (annual budget of app. $350,000); supervision and training of staff and volunteers: grant writing and fundraising initiatives; exhibit planning and design; artifact preservation and management; educational programming; and Museum promotion and community relations.  With a dedicated and creative staff and an involved Board, interpersonal skills are essential. There is a salary range of $50K - $60K, dependent on education and experience.  Medical and dental benefits are provided. Full job description below.

Preference will be given to applicants holding a degree in museum studies, arts administration or related fields.  A minimum five years work experience in museums and/or non-profit management is required.

Job Description for the Executive Director

The Telluride Historic Museum strives to be an indispensable cultural asset of the community and the region.  The leadership ability of the Executive Director is a critical component of the museum's efforts and of its dynamic role in historic preservation, education and community outreach.

Key responsibilities for the position include:

Manage museum human resources (including but not limited to full time staff, part time staff, volunteers, consultants) to deliver the museum's commitments with quality.

  • Attract, retain and develop museum staff.
  • Implement a professional development plan for staff balancing the needs of the museum and the interests of the individual.
  • Develop a strong team that projects a professional and creative face to the community.

Effectively implement the strategic plan.

  • Establish objective criteria that measure progress towards specific goals, and report progress to the board.

Manage museum day to day operations.

  • Ensure the facilities are properly maintained.
  • Ensure the museum is open and properly staffed during publicized hours including “Locals Day”.
  • Oversee the maintenance of the museum's computer hardware and software, and implement new technology as appropriate.
  • Ensure appropriate policies and procedures are in place, in conjunction with the Board.
  • Oversee museum store operations ensuring adequate oversight, inventory and profitability.
  • Implement contracts as needed for museum services.
  • Maintain an up-to-date industry appropriate disaster recovery plan.

Provide sound financial management and oversight.

  • Develop and manage annual plans and budgets that support the strategic plan.
  • Oversee and manage the budget, records, purchases, inventory, vendors, payroll and other information.
  • Aggressively pursue grants, sponsorships and recognition.
  • Develop and implement fundraising plans with the board to ensure overall and long term financial stability.

Preserve the history of the region with solid collection stewardship.

  • Appropriately preserve and store artifacts in the collection using the Museum's Collections Management Policies and Procedures.
  • Maintain artifact documentation, registration and catalogue information ensuring artifact accessibility.

Promote awareness of the museum within the region.

  • Effectively communicate with museum stakeholders - the Board of Directors, staff, members, donors, government representatives, community members, visitors, sponsors, vendors.
  • Develop a robust membership development program.
  • Promote positive relationships with key personnel, council representatives and commissioners in the towns of Telluride and Mountain Village, and in San Miguel County.
  • Develop and implement effective publicity, marketing and public relations campaigns to educate and raise awareness of the museum and its activities.
  • Cultivate relationships with area historical museums and centers.

Develop creative and forward thinking ideas appropriate to the mission that engage the community, and enrich the visitor experience.

  • Attract local residents and visitors through engaging and creative exhibits and programs.
  • Integrate the use of the collection with exhibits and programs.
  • Plan and develop exhibits within the museum and at off site locations.  Attract traveling exhibits that further enhance the visitor experience.
  • Promote and oversee the public use of the museum's facilities.

Assume responsibility for the overall operation of the museum, and other duties as assigned by the board.

The position reports to the President of the Board of Directors.
