The Museum Assistant will also collaborate with other staff members in developing and executing exhibits, community events, and fundraising efforts, while ensuring a high level of visitor satisfaction.

This is an excellent opportunity for individuals who thrive in a variety of tasks and enjoy contributing to the growth and success of a historical institution. If you have an interest in gaining broad experience in a museum setting and enhancing your skills, this position is ideal for you.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Assist with the installation and maintenance of the museum’s temporary, off-site, and permanent exhibitions.

  • Collaborate with staff to develop public programs, educational activities, and exhibit elements that enhance visitor engagement.

  • Support the creation of educational content that aligns with the Museum’s mission and is relevant to the Telluride community and its visitors.

  • Provide assistance with the management, preservation, and organization of the Museum’s artifact collection.

  • Help create and distribute marketing materials, including e-blasts, social media content, and promotional materials.

  • Contribute to the planning, coordination, and execution of the Museum’s membership program.

  • Assist in organizing, developing, and facilitating special events and fundraising activities.

  • Represent the Museum at community events and functions, fostering relationships with local partners and visitors.

  • Provide customer support at the Museum’s front desk, assisting visitors with inquiries and ensuring a positive experience.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Strong flexibility and adaptability, with the ability to handle a wide range of tasks and learn new skills.

  • Excellent multitasking and organizational abilities, able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences.

  • Experience in presenting to or working with varied audiences, from children to adults.

  • Spanish language proficiency is a plus.

  • Familiarity with basic computer programs and digital tools such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel), Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Gmail), social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram), Mailchimp, Constant Contact, and POS systems.

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.

  • Comfortable working in an open, family-like office environment.

  • Knowledge of or interest in the Telluride community is desirable.

  • Experience in a non-profit, arts, or cultural organization is preferred.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A degree from an accredited four-year college in a humanities field or a related discipline relevant to the Museum’s goals. A combination of education and relevant experience will also be considered in lieu of a degree.

  • Previous experience in a non-profit, arts, or cultural organization environment, or at least two years of experience in customer-facing or customer service roles.

Other Considerations

  • The Museum operates year-round, and while it is closed to the public during Telluride’s off-seasons, the Museum office staff remain active. The off-seasons can be particularly busy for the Museum Assistant. If having time off during these periods is important to you, this position may not be the best fit.
